Signing free agents: a recruitment guide

A free transfer removes the fee, not the cost. Wages, agent fees, signing-on payments and the opportunity cost of a squad place all remain — which is why free agents reward disciplined process more than any other recruitment channel.

Timing decides the market

Players inside the final six months of a contract can usually negotiate freely with clubs in other associations. That window, not the summer, is when the best free agents are decided.

Waiting until a player is already unattached usually means competing with clubs who identified him months earlier.

What to verify before anything else

Contract status and exact expiry date, in writing.

Representation — who is authorised to negotiate.

Work-permit and passport eligibility for your association.

Recent minutes played. A free agent with no competitive football for six months is a fitness project, and should be budgeted as one.

Filtering the pool efficiently

Filter by position, age band and availability first, then watch. On SCOUTVERSE, availability and contract status are structured fields on every unlocked profile, so a shortlist of genuinely reachable players can be built before a single clip is opened.

The mistakes that recur

Signing on reputation rather than current output.

Underestimating wage inflation across the squad once a marquee free agent's terms leak.

Skipping the medical depth you would apply to a paid transfer, because the fee was zero.

Next step

Clubs and scouts can search the full index with valuations, attributes and footage. Players list themselves free.
